MATERIAL
Back in the day, most sheets on the market came in cotton and ... cotton. And it's still the most popular sheeting fabric, due to its durability, comfort and breathability. While picking your favorite color is a snap, choosing sheets made from the right fabric to suit your preferences is a bit more complicated.
Cotton is the most popular fabric used to make sheets and other bedding, and for good reason. It’s durable, breathable, soft, easy to care for, and generally quite affordable.
Tencel is a brand name for fabric made out of eucalyptus tree wood pulp. It’s soft, very durable, and naturally antimicrobial. Tencel is generally considered an environmentally friendly fabric, as its production requires less water, energy and chemicals than does cotton.
Silk is a luxurious, soft fiber produced by silkworms. For sheer indulgence, it’s hard to beat real silk sheets—they’re cool, silky and sensuous, making them a must for the romantic or sexy bedroom.
Polyester is a manmade fiber produced from the same polymers used to make plastic drink bottles. While polyester is inexpensive, it’s quite stiff and scratchy when used on its own.
Linen is Ideal for hot climates, linen sheets are some of the most expensive out there, but will last for decades. For an already worn-in look and feel, "I love all the enzyme-washed linens on the market right now," Lemieux says. "They're soft and durable, and improve with age."
THREAD COUNT
Thread count isn't an indication of quality anymore. Unless it's an amazing and very expensive fabric, a high thread count is just a numbers game: many companies cheat the numbers with double twist yarns in a cheaper fabric. With all the buzz about thread count — the number of threads in 1 square inch of fabric — it's easy to assume that higher means softer. But that's not always the case. A lower-thread-count sheet made from fibers that are softer by nature, such as Egyptian cotton, will feel silkier than a high-thread-count sheet made from a lower-quality cotton blend.
Thread count also determines whether a sheet is muslin or percale. Sheets with a thread count of 140-180 are muslin. Everything higher is percale. The most common percale sheets have thread counts of 180-200. Higher-quality sheets have a 250-300 thread count and feel silky to the touch. Sheets with a high thread count (300-400) are considered luxury quality.
BREATHABILITY
Most bed linen is either printed or dyed. This makes it important to check whether the process used is chemical-free and determine if the bed linen is good for your skin. A pure cotton bed sheet is the most expensive one. The quality, softness and its anti-allergic properties are what make this fabric unmatched. Cotton sheets will become more comfortable and soft with each washing. The material and weave of the fabric also determines how breathable it is i.e. whether it will remain cool or heat-up against your skin.
SIZE
If you've ever tried to wrestle a too-small fitted sheet onto a mattress, you know how important it is to buy sheets that are the correct size. If you have a standard-size bed, such as a twin, queen or king, look for features such as elastic edging all the way around, which helps to ensure a smooth, snug fit.
